Girls, Grassroots and The Talent Pathway
For parents and guardians of football-loving girls in the UK, there’s never been a better time to get involved in the beautiful game. The pathway for girls in football starts early and offers numerous opportunities, whether your daughter is playing for fun or harbouring dreams of turning professional.
Girls can join local grassroots teams from as young as five. Many clubs offer mixed teams at younger age groups, allowing girls to play alongside boys. This early exposure to the sport can be crucial in developing skills and fostering a love for the game.
For girls aged 5-11 who are just starting out or want to play in a girls-only environment, the FA’s Weetabix Wildcats programme is a fantastic option. Wildcats sessions are non-competitive and focus on fun, making friends, and building confidence. As one mum, Laura, shared, “From day one, my daughter has felt welcomed and accepted—she comes away with the biggest smile on her face.”
As girls progress and show talent, they may have the opportunity to attend emerging talent centres while still playing for their grassroots clubs. Girls can also join more competitive teams or enter the FA’s talent pathway, which is designed to identify and nurture talented young players from age 14 upwards. For more detailed information about the professional development pathway, we recommend checking out the FA’s resources here.
